This is the Face on the much fought after Indian Head Rock. I believe this is what got the Rock it's name. The carving may be native American/ Hopewell/ Adena? At least that is what i've heard. The Rock is a large Sandstone boulder. It sat in the Ohio River by the mouth of the Scioto River in Portsmouth Ohio. This is the Rock that has spured countless stories. Yesterday the Radio DJ claimed the Rock had been stolen by the State of Kentucky and flown across the River into Kentucky. Kentucky is sueing the City of Portsmouth over this rock. While the Rock sat in the Ohio River the story goes that people would take a boat out and sit on the Rock. They would Tag it with the Graffitti of choice for the time. Carving. After all Pittsburg Paint wasn't real big 200 years ago. This Rock is locked up in the Portsmouth City Garage waiting the decision of the court as to what will happen to it. Kentucky wants it sunk back into the Ohio River, to the bottom where it was recovered from and salvaged by Divers and brought up by some sort of heavy equipment. This is a wonderful piece of Art and and Artifact that should not be lost. It must be seen in person to be truley appreciated. Every school classroom in Southern Ohio and school kid in Northeastern Kentucky should make a class trip to see this part of history. The deep carvings are overlapping and sometimes hard to figure out what they say, but people felt it was important enough ton leave thier mark here to show they were there once. And the historic significance of the dates and names of people that settled Ohio as well as Native American Carvings, show that it should not be worn away to only be a thing of the past.

I dated one of the daughters of the Fishery Engineer while in high school and visited the complex several times.
The dam was built in 1932 to control flooding along Wills Creek which flows from the dam.
The Army corp of engineers said it would take years for the lake to fill up. The week it was physically completed, but not yet open, they had a torrential rain fall, and the lake filled almost to the brim, flooding over the heavy equipment that had not been move from behind the dam site.
